FAQs

Roofing Frequently Asked Questions

Over the years, Royal Roofing has addressed thousands of homeowner questions regarding their roofs and gutters. To assist our visitors, listed below are some of the most frequently asked questions by our valued clients.

What is an ice dam?

An ice dam formation is the result of regular freezing and thawing of snow because of escaping heat from the house, or from gutters being backed up with frozen slush. When ice dams occur, water is driven under the roof which can cause damage to ceilings, walls, insulation, and gutters.

Will discarded nails be a safety concern?

We install tarps all around the perimeter of your home before we start tearing off your roofing. We remove all the roofing debris, clean out the gutters, and do a thorough cleaning of the grounds and surrounding landscaping. We also use a magnetic broom to pick up any nails that may have fallen to the ground.

Can you re-roof your home in the winter?

Re-roofing in the winter is actually smart. There is often a misconception by homeowners that shingles cannot be replaced in the winter and, as a result, contractors often lower their prices by 10% to 15% to keep their crews busy. In terms of the overall quality and installation of the roof, there is no difference.

Why are the corners of my shingles turning up?

Corners of shingles turning up is referred to as “curling” and is generally caused by excessive moisture attacking the underside of the shingle. Inadequate ventilation allows for heat and moisture to become trapped in the attic. This build-up of heat and moisture will eventually penetrate the roof deck and cause the shingles to curl. Improving air circulation within the attic space can stop the process and rectify the situation if the curling is not too severe.

What is winter curling and is it bad for my roof?

In some rare instances, curling can reveal itself only under cold weather conditions. This would be referred to as winter curling. The corners of the shingles will slightly curl up from the roof deck when cold, then lay flat again during warmer weather. This is prevalent during damp winter conditions when frost forms on the top surface of the shingles. Cooling on the top surface will cause the shingle to contract while, at the same time, the underside of the shingle in contact with the roof receives a certain amount of radiant heat from the attic space. The variance in temperature between the top side and underside of the shingle will result in some minor curling. This does not affect the shingle’s durability and performance.

Do I need to protect any items that are inside my home from possible damage?

The safe answer is yes. Although interior damage is very unlikely, with all roofing jobs there is a degree of vibration that comes down through the framework of the structure. It is recommended that you safeguard any fragile items such as pictures or sentimental knick-knacks that are not securely mounted to the wall. We encourage you to take a few minutes to protect any non-replaceable items.

How often should I clean my gutters?

Gutters should be cleaned at least once in the summer and twice in the fall.
